When someone types “mechanic near me” or “dentist in Swords”, Google shows a map with three businesses first, and plenty of people ring straight from it. Ranking higher on Google Maps comes down to two things: a complete, accurate Google Business Profile, and enough signals for Google to trust it over the businesses around you. In rural Ireland there's a third: making sure Google knows exactly where you are.
What a Google Business Profile is, and why it matters in Ireland
Your business appears on Google Maps through a listing Google calls a Business Profile: address, hours, phone, photos, reviews and the call, directions and website buttons. It's free, and you manage it from Google Search or the Maps app. Google My Business is its old name.
Steps 1 and 2: create the profile and get it verified
- Sign in with a Google account the business will keep for years, not an employee's personal one.
- Enter the business name exactly as on your sign, with no towns or services added.
- Choose the primary category: start typing what you do and pick the most specific option.
- If customers come to you, add the exact address with its Eircode. If you go to them, list the towns and counties you cover and hide the address.
- Add your phone and website, then choose how to verify.
Google may ask for a video showing your location, your signage and proof you run the place, recorded live in one take on your phone (Google's video verification guide). On a rural road with no street sign, show the Eircode on your premises, your sign and anything nearby that identifies the spot.
Step 3: put your Eircode everywhere
Every Irish address has its own Eircode (eircode.ie), and in the countryside, where several houses share a townland name, it's what puts the pin in the right place. Use the same Eircode on your profile, your website's contact page and every directory you're listed in, written the same way each time.
Step 4: complete the profile around real searches
| Field | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary category | The most specific one for your main service | It weighs heavily in which searches you appear for |
| Service area | The towns and counties you really cover | It shapes where you can appear if you travel to customers |
| Services | Each one listed, with a short description | They help Google match specific searches |
| Hours | Accurate, including bank holidays | Showing “Open” at the right time wins the call |
| Photos | Real ones: premises, van, team, work | People choose by what they see |
Step 5: climbing the map
Google says local results rest mainly on relevance, distance and prominence (how well known the business is, reviews and links included) (Google's tips to improve local ranking). You can't move the premises, so work on the other two:
- Recent reviews, all answered. Ask every customer after a good job, with a direct link, and reply to every review.
- A website that says the same thing. A page for each service and each town you cover backs the profile up. That's our local SEO work.
- The same details everywhere. Name, address, Eircode and phone identical on your site, your profile, Golden Pages, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect.
- Signs of life. New photos, updated services and posts show the business is active.
Local links and mentions
Prominence includes how often other sites mention you. For an Irish local business the useful ones are local: your GAA club or a team you sponsor, the Chamber in your town, a supplier's stockist page, the local paper or radio's website. A few real ones beat hundreds from directories nobody reads; bought links break Google's spam policies.
LocalBusiness structured data on your website
Structured data is code that tells Google your business type, address, hours and phone in a format it reads directly (Google's LocalBusiness guide). It backs the profile up with the same details from your own site.
Mistakes that keep Irish businesses off the map
- Adding towns or services to the business name, which breaks Google's guidelines and can get the listing suspended.
- No Eircode, so the pin lands in the wrong townland.
- Two listings for the same business, often one old and one new.
- A profile set up by a former web designer that nobody can edit.
- Offering a discount for reviews, which Google's policies forbid.
Is there a paid way to the top of the map?
There's no paid shortcut into the ordinary map results. What exists is Google Maps ads, labelled “Sponsored”, useful if you need calls while the profile earns its place. Questions about Google Maps for Irish businesses
Does a Google Business Profile cost anything in Ireland?
No. Creating and managing it is free. What costs money are Google Maps ads, which are optional and labelled “Sponsored”.
How soon will my business appear on Google Maps?
Once verified, the profile can appear within days, but reaching the top three for competitive searches takes longer, because it depends on your reviews, your website and the businesses around you.
My business is in the countryside. How do I make sure Google finds it?
Add your Eircode to the profile and website, check the pin is on your premises and correct it if not, and use the same address format everywhere. If customers don't visit, hide the address and list the towns you cover.
Why did my listing disappear from Google Maps?
Usually a suspension for breaking the guidelines (towns or services in the name, for example), a duplicate listing or an address change that wasn't verified. Check the alerts in your profile first.
