How much does SEO cost in the UK? Ask three agencies and you'll get three quotes that are hard to compare, because each sells a different amount of work under the same name. Below are the rates UK providers publish in 2026, what each price should buy, how VAT fits in and the warning signs in a proposal, so you can read any SEO quote with a clear head, ours included.
SEO prices in the UK: what agencies and consultants charge
| What you buy | Typical UK price | Usually suits |
|---|---|---|
| Local SEO retainer | £300-£800/month | A local business in one town or area |
| SEO for a growing small business | £800-£2,000/month | Several services or areas, more content |
| National or competitive SEO | £2,000-£5,000/month | National reach or very crowded markets |
| Experienced freelancer, hourly | £60-£150/hour | Specific jobs and second opinions |
| SEO consultant, hourly | £100-£250/hour | Strategy and audits |
| One-off SEO audit | £500-£3,000 | Finding what's wrong before deciding |
Whito's study combines prices UK SEO providers publish on their own websites with industry benchmarks, so read it as a map of the market rather than a quote. What moves a price within each band is in the next sections. If a quote is shown before VAT, add the standard 20% (GOV.UK) when you compare it with one that includes it.
The four ways SEO is priced in the UK
| Model | How it works | Good for | Ask for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly retainer | A fixed fee for ongoing work | Most local and small businesses | A list of what's done each month |
| Hourly or day rate | You pay for the time spent | Specific questions or small fixes | An estimate of hours before work starts |
| Fixed project | One price for an agreed job (an audit, a migration) | A defined piece of work | The deliverables, written down |
| Pay on results | You pay per ranking or per enquiry | Rarely a good idea | What counts as a result, and who measures it |
What makes SEO cost more, or less
- How crowded your market is. A garage in Kendal and a dentist in central Manchester aren't playing the same game.
- How many services and towns you cover. Each one usually needs its own page and its own work.
- The state of your website. A slow site with technical problems needs fixing before new pages pay off.
- Who writes the content. Copy written for you costs more than optimising text you provide.
- Local or national. Local SEO adds the Business Profile and reviews; national adds more content and links.
What a proper SEO proposal should list
- The searches you'll target, grouped by what people want.
- The pages to create or improve, one by one.
- What happens to your Google Business Profile, if you serve a local area.
- The technical fixes, in order of what they cost you.
- How enquiries will be measured, in accounts in your name.
- What's done each month, and how you'll see it.
- The notice period to stop, and whether VAT is included.
Red flags in an SEO quote
- Guaranteed position one on Google. Nobody controls that.
- Packages of hundreds of links for a small fee: Google's spam policies treat bought links as spam.
- A 12-month contract before you've seen any work.
- Monthly reports full of graphs that never say what was done.
- Accounts (Search Console, Analytics, your Business Profile) set up in the agency's name.
Questions to ask a UK SEO agency before you sign
Google's own guide, Do you need an SEO?, lists questions worth asking any provider. These are the ones that matter most when comparing prices:
- Who will actually do the work, and will I deal with them directly?
- What would you change first on my site, and why?
- What will I get each month, and where will I see it?
- What's the notice period, and do I keep everything if I leave?
How long SEO takes to pay for itself
Nobody can give you an honest date in advance: it depends on your area, your competitors and the state of your site. A new page needs time for Google to find and trust it. What usually moves first for a local business is a well-built Business Profile and pages for services nobody else covers well nearby. How our SEO fee works
A monthly fee set for your business and quoted before anything starts. It starts with a free audit: who wins your searches today, which pages you're missing and what we'd do first. If it suits you, we do the groundwork and you only pay the first invoice once it's live and you've checked it. If you serve a local area, see local SEO as well. Questions about SEO prices in the UK
How much should a small business spend on SEO per month in the UK?
Whito's 2026 data puts local SEO at £300-£800/month and growing small businesses at £800-£2,000/month; national or very competitive campaigns cost more. What matters is what the fee buys each month.
Are SEO packages in the UK usually quoted with VAT?
Often without: most agencies and many freelancers are VAT-registered and show prices before VAT. Ask, and compare quotes on the same basis. If your business is VAT-registered, the figure before VAT is usually the one that matters.
Is cheap SEO worth it?
Sometimes, if the fee buys clear work: a few good pages and a complete Business Profile can be enough locally. Be wary when a low price comes with link packages or reports that never say what was done, because that can cost you more later.
Can I do my own SEO?
A lot of it, yes: completing your Business Profile, asking for reviews, writing a page for each service. What owners usually lack is time and a clear order of priorities, which an audit gives you even if you do the work yourself.
Why does SEO cost money every month?
Because the work carries on after the groundwork: new pages, your Business Profile, reviews and fixes as Google and your competitors change. Each month you should see what was done. With us there's no minimum term: 30 days' notice to stop.
Does SEO cost more for an online shop?
Usually, because there's more to work on: categories, product pages and the filters that create thousands of near-identical pages. With us the fee depends on the size of your catalogue; the proposal says which categories and products each month covers, before we start. More on ecommerce SEO.
Is SEO cheaper than paying for the same clicks on Google Ads?
It depends on how much those clicks cost in your sector and how many of them you'd get by ranking. Our SEO ROI calculator works it out with your own searches: what ranking higher could bring in, and what the same visits would cost you in Google Ads.
