How much does SEO cost? Ask three agencies and you'll get three quotes that are hard to compare, because each one sells a different amount of work under the same name. Below are the rates SEO providers report in two pricing surveys, with US and Canada figures broken out, what each price should buy and the warning signs in a proposal, so you can read any quote with a cool head, ours included.

SEO pricing: what agencies and consultants charge

How it's billedMost common rate, all respondentsIn the US and Canada
Monthly retainer$501-$1,000/month (20.4% of respondents)79.1% charge from $1,001/month
Hourly$75-$100/hour (24%)66.7% charge $75-$200/hour
Per project$2,501-$5,000 (21.2%)83.3% charge from $1,001

Ahrefs' survey polled SEO providers in many countries, and its US and Canada column shows prices well above the global figure. SE Ranking's 2025 survey of 260 agencies points the same way: 64% of agencies charge under $1,000/month, while 40% of agencies in the US and Canada charge over $125/hour. Both surveys ask providers, not their clients, and mix every kind of business, so read them as a map of the market.

The four ways SEO is priced

SEO pricing models and when each one fits
ModelHow it worksFits whenCheck
Monthly retainerA fee every month for ongoing workThere's new work each month: pages, profile, reviews, fixesA written list of what gets done each month, and the minimum term
Fixed projectOne price for a defined list of work and a dateA one-off job: a site move, a set of pagesThe page list and the date, both in the contract
HourlyYou pay for the hours spentSpecific questions or small fixesAn estimate of hours before work starts
SEO auditA report of what's wrong and the order to fix itLarger sites, or before a redesignWhether the fixes are included or priced separately

A retainer makes sense when there's real work every month. For a plumber, a clinic or a law firm, the first months carry most of the work (the right pages built and the site fixed), and after that the monthly work should still be visible: new pages, reviews, your profile kept current. Paying every month for a report with nothing new on it is the thing to avoid.

What changes the cost of SEO for a small business

  • Where your site starts. A slow site with one “Services” page needs more work than a fast one that only lacks a few pages.
  • How many services and areas you cover. Each one usually deserves its own page with its own copy.
  • Your competition. Ranking for a service in a big metro with established competitors takes more than in a smaller town.
  • Local, ecommerce or national. Local SEO ties your site to your Google Business Profile and your area; a store has categories and products to work on; national SEO competes with everyone.
  • Who writes the content. Copy written for you, based on what customers actually search, is a large part of the work.

What a good SEO proposal includes

Whatever the model, a proposal you can hold the agency to says what will be done, page by page, and by when. At minimum, look for:

  1. An audit of where the site stands today, with the searches it should show up for.
  2. The list of pages to create or rewrite, one by one.
  3. The fixes to speed, mobile and indexing problems that hold the site back.
  4. For local businesses, work on the Google Business Profile alongside the site.
  5. What happens each month after the setup, and how you'll see it.
  6. Who owns the work: the content and the pages stay yours if you stop.

Warning signs in an SEO quote

  • Long minimum terms with no written list of monthly work.
  • Vague deliverables like “optimization” or “link building” with no pages or numbers attached.
  • Reports full of rankings for searches nobody makes.
  • Bought links or private networks of sites, which Google's guidelines treat as spam.
  • A price far below the market with no explanation of what gets done.

Questions to ask before you hire an SEO

Google's own guide, Do you need an SEO?, lists questions worth asking any provider. These are the ones that matter most when you compare prices:

  1. Can you show me examples of your previous work?
  2. What results do you expect, in what timeframe, and how will you measure them?
  3. What's your experience in my city or area?
  4. Will you share every change made to my site?
  5. What do I get each month, and can I cancel?

How long until SEO pays off

SEO changes take time to show up because Google has to find, crawl and reassess the new pages, and results depend on what your competitors do too. Anyone who gives you a fixed date for results is guessing. What can have a fixed date is the work: the pages and fixes being live. That's why we stand behind the work and never promise rankings.

How we price SEO

With us, SEO is a monthly fee we set for your business and quote before anything starts, with no setup fee and no long-term contract. After the setup, each month brings new or improved pages, your listing kept up to date and a summary of the work on your tracking page. It starts with a free audit where we search for what you sell the way your customers do and look at who shows up and why. In under a week you get the pages we'd build, the fixes we'd make and the date the setup would be live. Your first monthly fee only comes once it's live and you've checked it. If your customers are local, see local SEO; if you first need to know what's wrong with a large site, start with an SEO audit. Questions about SEO pricing

How much does SEO cost per month for a small business?

In Ahrefs' survey, the most common monthly retainer among all respondents was $501-$1,000/month, and most providers in the US and Canada charge from $1,001/month. Local businesses in smaller markets often need less than national or ecommerce sites.

Is SEO worth it for a small business?

It usually is when people search for what you sell in your area, because those searches bring customers who already need you. It's less useful when nobody searches for your service yet. The audit tells you which case you're in before you spend anything.

Is local SEO cheaper than regular SEO?

Local SEO often needs less work because you compete with nearby businesses instead of the whole country. It adds its own tasks, though: the Google Business Profile, reviews and a page for each area you serve.

Can I do SEO myself?

Yes, a lot of it: completing your Google Business Profile, asking for reviews, writing a page for each service. What owners usually lack is time and a clear order of priorities, and that's what an audit gives you even if you do the work yourself.

Why do I have to keep paying every month for SEO?

Because the work continues after the setup: new pages, your Google Business Profile, reviews and fixes as Google and your competitors change. What you should get each month is a written list of what was done. With us there's no long-term contract: you can cancel with 30 days' notice.
