Ecommerce SEO so your online store gets orders from Google

Your products are good, but Google shows Amazon.ca, Canadian Tire and the big chains first. We rework your categories and product pages so people searching for what you sell land in your store.

A search for “womens trail running shoes”: the store's category page goes from generic to one with ratings, “In stock” and “Free shipping”, climbs to the top result and an order comes in. Store and data are examples.

You carry the product, and Google sends the buyer to Amazon.ca

It happens to most small online stores, and most of it can be fixed.
  • Your product pages carry the manufacturer's description, the same text dozens of other Canadian stores use.
  • Category pages are a grid of photos with no text, so Google can't tell what they're about.
  • Every size and colour filter creates a new address, and Google crawls thousands of them.
  • Sales only come in while Shopping ads run, and your margin can't keep paying for every click.

What changes once the store is organized around searches

How we get there

We start with how people search for what you sell: by category (“women's winter boots waterproof”), by need (“gift for a cottage owner”) and by brand and model. Each kind of search needs its own kind of page, and most stores only have product pages.

Then we organize the store so every search that matters has its page, rewrite the copy that sells and tidy the technical side so Google spends its time on the pages that make money.

  • Category pages that rank

Useful copy, clear filters and links that tell Google these are your most important pages.

    category architecture and on-page SEO

  • Product pages that answer buying questions

Descriptions written for your customers, with sizing, materials, shipping and returns answered on the page.

  • Price, stock and stars right in Google

Your product shows its price, availability and rating in the search result, which helps it stand out from the listing above.

    Product structured data, validated

How our ecommerce SEO work runs, stage by stage

Four stages, planned around your sales so nothing gets in their way.
  1. Research your catalogue's searches

Which categories, needs and products people search for, and which ones your store already ranks for.

  2. Plan the store's structure

Which category and subcategory pages you need, how filters behave and which pages Google should skip.

  3. Write the pages that sell

The category and product copy in your proposal, with your input on what customers ask before they buy.

  4. Clean up and check

Duplicates, filters, speed and product data fixed and tested on a copy, then every change verified in Search Console.

How the monthly SEO fee works

Questions about SEO for Canadian online stores

What Canadian store owners ask us. If yours isn't here, put it in the audit form.

What do ecommerce SEO services include?

Work on an online store so its categories and products come up on Google for searches that end in a sale: structure, category and product copy, filters and duplicates, product data and speed. Ads aren't part of it; that's Shopping, a separate service.

Is Shopify good for SEO, or should I switch?

Shopify ranks well when it's set up properly, so switching is rarely the answer. The usual problems are products at several addresses, tag pages nobody asked for, apps slowing every page and collections with no copy. All four can be fixed on Shopify.

How much does SEO for an online store cost?

With us it's a monthly fee based mostly on the size of your catalogue and quoted after the audit, with no setup fee and no contract term. If the store needs development work, the proposal says so before we start. The first invoice comes once the first changes are live and you've reviewed them in your store.

Do I need my own product descriptions?

For your best sellers, yes. Supplier copy sits on dozens of other stores, so Google has no reason to pick yours. We rewrite the top products first, answering sizing, materials, shipping and returns on the page.

Will SEO changes slow down my sales while you work?

They shouldn't. We test changes before they go live, keep every old address pointing to its new one and stay away from the store in your busiest weeks, like Black Friday and December. You approve each batch on your tracking page.

If I switch my store to Shopify or WooCommerce, will my Google rankings drop?

We plan the move so you keep what Google already rewards: every old product and category URL redirects to its new page, and the titles and copy that rank carry over. No one can promise exact rankings after a platform switch, but a planned migration avoids the usual drop in traffic and sales.

Ecommerce SEO gets an online store's categories and products showing on Google for searches that end in a purchase. It covers the store's structure, the copy on category and product pages, filters and duplicates, and the product data Google uses to show price, shipping and stock.

More detail: Ecommerce SEO

Every order that comes from an ad eats into your margin

When all your orders come from paid campaigns, each one carries the cost of the clicks that brought it. Organic visits don't, and a category page that ranks keeps selling month after month, through slow stretches and the run-up to the holidays.

That takes time to build, and the clock starts once the pages are live. In the free audit we show you which searches your store could win and which pages are missing.

Selling online in Canada: shipping, taxes and prices Google can show

Canadian shoppers compare shipping costs and delivery times before they compare products, and Google can show both in the result if your product data includes them. We set shipping and returns in Merchant Center and on the page, prices in Canadian dollars and stock that matches what's really on the shelf.

Taxes need care too. GST/HST depends on where the buyer is, from 5% GST to HST of 13% or more (CRA), so prices on the page and in the feed have to follow the same rule. And if you sell into Quebec, product pages in French are part of the plan.

Shopify SEO: the four problems we see most in Canadian stores

Shopify is a good platform for a small store, and it comes with habits that work against SEO if nobody touches them. These four are worth checking in any Shopify store.

  • Products reachable at several addresses

A product can open under /products/ and under each collection it belongs to. Internal links should point to one address, so Google doesn't split its attention.

    collection-aware product URLs and canonicals

  • Tag and filter pages nobody asked for

Collection tags create pages with thin lists of products. Some deserve to rank; most should stay out of Google.

    tag pages, noindex and robots.txt.liquid

  • Apps that slow every page

Each app you installed may load its own scripts, even after you stop using it. We list them and remove what doesn't earn its place.

  • Collections with no copy

A collection page with only a product grid gives Google little to go on. A few useful paragraphs and answered questions change that.

WooCommerce SEO, and stores on other platforms

WooCommerce depends heavily on the theme and the plugins installed, and the usual trouble is speed and duplicate category archives. BigCommerce, Squarespace and headless setups each have their own quirks. We work with what you have and tell you if something on your platform is holding you back.

If you're about to build or rebuild the store, planning SEO from the start costs less: see ecommerce website design. And if you want sales while SEO builds, Google Shopping ads put your products on Google from the day they're approved.

What's included, point by point

  • Each search mapped to one page

Searches grouped by category, need and product, each assigned to the page that will serve it.

    catalogue keyword research

  • Category pages that bring sales

Copy, headings, filters and internal links for the categories that sell.

usually the most valuable pages in a store

  • Product copy written from scratch

For your best products: sizing, materials, care and shipping answered, in your store's voice.

  • Filters that don't flood Google

Size, colour and sorting options stop creating thousands of copies of the same page (Google's guidance on faceted navigation).

    canonicals, noindex and parameter handling

  • Product details Google can show

Price, availability and reviews in the format Google uses for rich results (its product data guide).

    Product and Offer schema, validated

  • Product pages that load fast

Images, apps and scripts trimmed so product pages open quickly on a phone.

    Core Web Vitals

When ecommerce SEO pays off for a store, and when it won't

Worth it if

  • You run an online store with a defined catalogue and want sales beyond ads.
  • Your store is on Shopify, WooCommerce or a similar platform.
  • You can share sales data so we know which products matter most.

Not a fit if

  • Your catalogue has tens of thousands of products and needs custom development.
  • You need sales this week: Shopping ads fit better for that.
  • You only sell on Amazon or Etsy and don't have a store of your own.
